The art project Överraska, variera förändra that includes two art assignments, where the artists Lisa Torell and Jenny Nordmark have explored different aspects of the history, identity and future of Jönköping Municipality. The investigative art process takes place within the framework of two extended sketch assignments, where the possibilities for an open and a permanent artistic expression are explored. From the summer of 2023 to the summer of 2024, an implementation phase will follow containing dialogue-based, temporary and permanent actions and artworks. Both the extended sketch period and the implementation phase are documented by documentary filmmakers Mima Pastor and Palle Lindqvist and will be compiled in a film about the project.

The purpose of the art project Surprise, vary, change is to test the possibilities for public art in Jönköping Municipality, in relation to the Urban Environment Program “City Art” which was adopted by the Jönköping Municipal Board in 2016. In the two art assignments, artists Lisa Torell and Jenny Nordmark have had the urban environment program as a foundation to enter into dialogue with by exploring and problematizing what public art can and should be in Jönköping Municipality, and in general.

Artist Jenny Nordmark’s art explores topics that touch on current issues connected to the environment and climate, the local and the global, the meanings and consequences of human exploitation of natural resources. In the work Rädda konsten (2022-) presented in the exhibition, Nordmark has started from three different elements, the start-up of a new association, Rädda konsten, a boat campaign planned for the summer of 2024 that connects to the Boat Campaign that the Save Vättern association did in 1988. As well as a permanent design that will be placed somewhere on Lake Vättern. The boat itself that will run the campaign will have its sail woven by local weavers according to the Råbocks tradition. A boat that is specific to Lake Vättern. The boat hull itself is made of material that explores new types of material compositions with the local material limestone together with a materials scientist. After the campaign, the boat is anchored in Lake Vättern and over time, perhaps a year, perhaps longer, the limestone composition weathers and the boat sinks to the bottom. With Lake Vättern's long turnover time, about 70 years, the material then remains in dissolved form for a long time and becomes an active part in purifying the water. The material generated by the campaign and the association will be submitted to the Jönköping County People's Movement Archive as a final step.

Artist Lisa Torell comes from the performative place-based art field and works with issues related to public space and its regulations and rights that affect our way of being, acting, living and working. Society is the driving force, about being seen and seeing, in community and in solitude. In her art assignment for Jönköping Municipality, Torell has focused on rest areas intended for commercial traffic and professional drivers. Or a kind of giga-society infrastructure, logistics and human shortcomings. Good rest areas increase traffic safety, because their design encourages us to get out of our cars, move around and maybe even take a dip. A kind of entry to the municipality's opportunities and potential, to its attractions and tourism. But this only applies to the rest areas that are intended for us who are not professional drivers. For those who are, it looks different. In the exhibition, Torell gives the viewer a kind of insight into his investigation of the everyday lives of professional drivers and the places where they spend their breaks and breaks, through a video, Scenes 2022-23 which takes place at Gyllene Uttern, Östgötaporten, Rasta Ödeshög, Circle K Hyltena and Circle K Bottnaryd Scenes 2022-2023. Based on Jönköping municipality as a location also a hub for transportation and infrastructure, I chose to focus on the rest areas intended for commercial traffic and professional drivers. The starting point for me throughout the project has been an interest in aesthetics and care and equal opportunities in public space. The rest areas play a vital role within the gig economy and infrastructure, supporting the flow of goods and the safety of drivers. Rest areas intended for commercial traffic and professional drivers. The planning of these spaces balances accessibility, practical necessity, and the imperative to reduce fatal accidents.
